Kinfolk Cafe

A cozy corner cafe in sleepy Long Bay that delivered a genuinely heavenly benedict on a miserable rainy day — oblongular rostis, butter-brown hollandaise, and thick-cut bacon divinity. Almost perfect, undone only by a confused poached egg.

I made a social fo pa. I wasn't born french. And I also went out for brunch while pressed under the mighty thumb of a savage illness. Eager for a temporary reprieve, I took solace in a hearty eggs benedict at the cozy Kinfolk Cafe.

At what must be the main corner of suburban Long Bay, Kinfolk is an indoor/outdoor seating cafe that graced me with blankets and warm shelter on an otherwise miserable day. The wifey and I took our seats, and shortly after I had my benedict and oat milk iced latte ordered.

As we waited the rain outside settled in, and we sat in the enclosed outside seating area as the weather beat against the transparent wall panels. The tables were relatively proximal which gave the setting a rather cozy atmosphere, and before long, our food arrived, and honestly it's hard to beat the feeling of a snug brunch out when the miserable weather matches your miserable wellbeing. A hearty benedict can cure any ailment so I hear.

The thick cut bacon was divinity itself; the hollandaise was the warm blanket my breakfast needed on a cold winter's day, and don't get me started on the oblongular rostis - delicioso. The hollandaise was technically butter brown, and while I don't know what butter brown is, I can now tell you that I enjoy it. All topped off with some spring onions for a bit of greenery on an otherwise grey day - collectively the benedict was an absolute treat.

The chink in the armor of this formidable breakfast was the poached eggs, which were somehow simultaneously both over and undercooked.

Writing this review I am cured of my disease and who knows, it might have been this very breakfast that was my cure. I left feeling like a phoenix risen from my aches, recharged and rejuvenated for another 7 days until my next benedict. The coffee was coffee, the benedict was heavenly, and the atmosphere was an apt for a cozy nook in sleepy Long Bay. The benedict receives an 8.6 / 10 and the overall madrosti_ score is 8.8 / 10.
